The Blueprint Exists. The Willpower Doesn’t. (Yet.)

We are living in a paradox of progress. For the first time in human history, we possess the technical, organizational, and economic tools to solve our most intractable problems. We have the hardware and the software for a new world.

Yet, we are not using them.

Instead of building a future of abundance and accountability, we are busy minting meme coins, doom-scrolling through algorithmic rage-bait, and arguing with bots on centralized platforms. The question is no longer “What do we do?” The question is, “How do we get 8 billion people to actually do it?”

As Eric Hoffer famously noted, “Mass movements can rise and spread without belief in a God but never without belief in a devil.” If your campaign for change does not name a clear villain, you can be certain that the established powers will successfully paint you as the villain.

The core villains:

1. Concentrated power Governments, corporations, platforms, institutions, or elites becoming powerful enough to operate without meaningful accountability.

2. The attention economy Systems that monetize outrage, fear, tribalism, misinformation and human cognitive biases rather than helping people understand reality.

3. Propaganda and manipulation Actors who deliberately distort information to make people fight each other instead of examining the underlying problem.

4. Credentialism without understanding An education system that rewards memorisation, exam performance and certificates while neglecting critical thinking, self-awareness, transfer of learning and understanding how the world works.

5. Economic precarity A system in which educated people can spend years studying and still lack meaningful economic opportunities or bargaining power.

6. Centralisation and gatekeeping A small number of institutions controlling access to information, education, communication, finance or political influence.

7. Scam-driven speculation Particularly in crypto: extracting money through hype, manipulation and worthless tokens instead of creating useful networks and productive value. Also stock market to many extent that is speculative.

8. Institutional unaccountability Not necessarily “the government” or “the courts” themselves, but institutions that stop seeing themselves as accountable to the people they are supposed to serve.

9. Political tribalism The mechanism that turns citizens into enemies and makes people defend their side rather than solve problems.

10. Learned helplessness The belief that ordinary people cannot change institutions and therefore should simply adapt to whatever powerful actors decide.

We Already Have Better Organizational Tools

Here is the irony: We have the antidote to every single one of these poison pills. We have “Teal” organizational structures—decentralized, autonomous, and purpose-driven—that can scale horizontally. And thanks to the maturation of decentralized technologies (Nostr, Iroh, and blockchain), we can now implement these structures algorithmically.

We are approaching the physical limits of decentralization, and we are winning.

• Nostr beats CRDTs at “Physics-Level” Decentralization: Nostr’s Relay Model fits the speed of light: Nostr doesn’t require relays to talk to each other or agree on state. You sign an event, blast it to 20 relays, and you’re done. Latency is just network round-trip time. If a relay goes down, you connect to another. This statelessness is inherently more robust than the stateful dependencies of CRDTs, which get exponentially slower as groups grow.
• Cost is no longer a barrier: The transaction cost of modern blockchains has dropped to $0.00001, that’s fractions of a cent. You can onboard millions of users for the price of a cup of coffee.
• Speed of Development: With the advent of advanced LLMs, we can build these applications in months, not years. Unlike blockchains, which are immutable and slow to adapt, off-chain protocols like Nostr allow for rapid innovation. You can have millions of moderators and thousands of algorithm combinations and reputation system. The blockchain should simply be used to handle the treasury.

We even have the macroeconomic tailwinds. Global fertility rates are declining, reducing population pressure. Renewable energy is plummeting in cost. We are building better, cheaper batteries that don’t rely on rare earth materials. The physical conditions for a sustainable, post-scarcity economy are aligning.

The Illusion of Revolution

We actually have the blueprint to dismantle all ten of these villains: Teal organizations.

Teal structures are self-managing, purpose-driven, and capable of scaling to any level. Thanks to decentralized technologies, we can now implement them algorithmically. If we run our organizations as Teal, we structurally solve the problems of concentrated power, gatekeeping, and unaccountability.

We already have conviction voting for treasury and a dozen other algorithms and combinations to try out. To stretch it to its limits, we can have an expertise-based reputation system, with each DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) having 10,000 members making up an organization.

But look at what we are actually doing.

Instead of building Teal organizations on the blockchain, we are minting meme coins that have zero economic value. Can you believe the insanity? Between 560 million and 741 million users worldwide hold cryptocurrency, and the vast majority of it is tied up in worthless speculative junk. Is this how Gen Z will get their revolution? By trading digital dog coins while the world burns?

We have built the tools for liberation, and the masses are using them to build digital casinos.

Furthermore, when we tell people to leave disinformation-heavy social media, Gen Z and Millennials are deeply reluctant. They are habituated to and acquainted with a dystopian virtual world filled with bots, disinformation, propaganda, and abuse.

The Bottleneck: Leadership and the Human Heart

So, if the tech is ready, the economics are aligned, and the organizational models exist… what is missing?

Leadership. And the courage to lead.

Visionaries see the future, but the general public is terrified of social friction. I experienced this intimately recently. I told my wife, “Let’s go door-to-door to promote a decentralized autonomous organization and provide them free governance tokens.”

She became furious. “What will people say if you go door to door? They will gossip about us and criticize us. What if we fail?”

She literally cannot imagine the world the way I do. She is bound by the social conformity and fear of judgment of the old paradigm. Sometimes, you just have to save your emotional bandwidth rather than spending hours arguing with someone who is anchored to the dying world.

This anecdote is not just about my marriage; it is a microcosm of the global bottleneck. We have the solutions, but we lack the leaders who are willing to face social ostracization to build the movement. We lack the storytellers who can translate Nostr, Teal orgs, and conviction voting into a narrative that defeats the 10 villains.

We cannot wait for the masses to suddenly wake up. We cannot wait for the meme-coin traders to realize the absurdity of their actions. We have to build the movement from the ground up, door-to-door if necessary, ignoring the gossip, and saving our emotional bandwidth for the actual work.

The solutions are here. The technology is physics-ready. The narrative just needs a villain, and the movement just needs leaders.

It’s time to stop arguing with those who can’t see the vision, and start building the future with those who can.
